What Makes Something Alive?

Your classroom has living and nonliving things. Desks and books are nonliving, but your classmates and plants are living. Living things share common characteristics that set them apart.

Cells: Basic Units of Life

All living things, from tiny bacteria to large elephants, are made of tiny building blocks called cells. These cells are so small that you cannot see them without special tools. For example, Robert Hooke first observed and named cells over 300 years ago using an early microscope.

Seeing the Invisible

• Cells are too tiny for the unaided eye.

• Robert Hooke built an early microscope.

• He saw "little boxes" in cork, called them cells.

• Anton van Leeuwenhoek made stronger microscopes.

Robert Hooke's Discovery

Robert Hooke, over 300 years ago, used an early microscope. He observed thin slices of cork and saw tiny, box-like structures. Hooke named these small structures "cells," a term still used today.

Anton van Leeuwenhoek

Anton van Leeuwenhoek was a Dutch merchant who made much better microscopes. His microscopes could magnify objects up to 270 times their original size. This allowed him to observe tiny living organisms, like bacteria, for the very first time.

Leeuwenhoek's microscopes revealed magnified microorganisms in detail.

The Cell Theory

• All living things are made of cells.

• Cells are the smallest unit of life.

• New cells come from existing cells.

Light Microscopes

Light microscopes use light and lenses to make small things look bigger. They can magnify objects up to 1,500 times their actual size. For example, blood cells often need a special dye to be seen clearly with a light microscope.

What They Are

Two Main Types

Electron microscopes are very powerful tools that use beams of electrons instead of light. They can magnify images 100,000 times or more, showing incredibly tiny details. This allows scientists to see structures that are too small for even the best light microscopes.

Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEMs) look through very thin samples to show internal structures, like the tiny parts inside a cell. Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEMs) bounce electrons off an object's surface to create a detailed, three-dimensional image of its outside. Both types help us explore the microscopic world.
