Characters are the people, animals, or even things in a story. They are who the story is all about! For example, in 'The Three Little Pigs,' the pigs are the characters.

What Are Verbs?

Verbs are special words that show action! They tell us what characters or things are doing in a story. Think of words like *run*, *jump*, or *laugh*.

• Jump: Bounce up in the air!

• Run: Move your legs fast!

What Are They Doing?

Let's practice again! Read this sentence: The little bird *sings* a pretty song. What is the bird doing? The word that tells us the action is the verb.

Characters in stories are always doing something. These 'doing' words are called verbs! Think about when Little Red Riding Hood *walked* to Grandma's house or when the Three Little Pigs *built* their homes.
