What is a Sentence?

A sentence is a group of words that shares a complete idea. For example, 'The sun shines brightly' tells us something clear.

Boy enjoys sunshine, like a bright sentence.

Simple Sentences

A simple sentence shares one complete idea. It has one subject (who or what) and one verb (what it does). For example, 'The bird sings' is a simple sentence.

Bluebird sings a simple sentence.

Finding the Subject

• The subject tells us WHO or WHAT a sentence is about.

• It's often the person, animal, or thing doing something.

• Ask: "Who or what is doing the action?"

• Example: *The squirrel* climbs the tree. (Squirrel!)

Finding the Verb

The verb is the action word in a sentence. It tells what the subject does or is. In 'The squirrel climbs the tree,' 'climbs' is the verb because it shows what the squirrel is doing.

Two Simple Sentences?

We know what a simple sentence is! But what if you have two ideas that go together, like 'I like to draw.' and 'I like to paint.'? How can we make them into one smooth sentence?

Joining Words!

We can put two simple sentences together to make one longer sentence. We use special "joining words" to connect them, like a bridge. For example, "I like apples" and "I like bananas" can become "I like apples AND bananas."

What is a Compound Sentence?

A compound sentence puts two simple sentences together. We use special joining words like 'and,' 'but,' or 'or' to connect them. For example, "I like apples, and I like bananas."
