The arts, like music, theater, dance, and drawing, are all around us! They help us understand the world and share our feelings in many fun ways, like singing a song or painting a picture.

What is Sound?

Sounds All Around Us

Sound is made when things vibrate, or shake, creating waves that travel through the air. Our ears catch these waves, and our brain understands them as different sounds. For example, when you pluck a guitar string, it vibrates and makes music.

Sounds help us know what is happening, like hearing a fire truck siren or a friend calling our name. Music uses sounds to tell stories and express feelings, from a soft lullaby to a booming drum solo. We use sounds every day to communicate and enjoy the world.

Sound: Vibrations You Hear

Sounds are all around us, from music to talking. They are made when something vibrates, which means it moves back and forth very quickly. Think about a guitar string wiggling after you pluck it, or a drum skin shaking when you hit it.

Pitch: High or Low?

• Pitch tells us if a sound is high or low.

• A small flute makes a high, clear sound.

• A big tuba makes a low, rumbling sound.

• Your voice can make high squeaks or low growls.

Volume: Loud or Soft?

Volume describes how loud or soft a sound is. A whisper is a very soft sound, while a fire truck siren is very loud. We use volume to make music exciting!
