O Universo Clássico

No final do século XIX, a física clássica dominava, descrevendo um universo previsível e determinístico. O Enigma Fotoelétrico

O Efeito Fotoelétrico, observado por Hertz em 1887, revelou que a emissão de elétrons de um metal, como o zinco, dependia da frequência da luz, não de sua intensidade. Isso contradizia a física clássica, que previa a intensidade como fator crucial. Einstein, em 1905, explicou-o ao propor que a luz é composta por partículas, os fótons.

Átomos Instáveis?

O modelo atômico de Rutherford, baseado na física clássica, previa que elétrons em órbita perderiam energia continuamente e colapsariam no núcleo em microssegundos. Isso tornaria os átomos instáveis e não explicaria os espectros de emissão discretos, como as linhas de Balmer para o hidrogênio. Essa contradição fundamental exigia uma nova compreensão da matéria.

A Hipótese de Planck

Em 1900, Max Planck propôs uma ideia revolucionária para resolver o problema da radiação do corpo negro: a energia não é contínua, mas emitida e absorvida em "pacotes" discretos, que ele chamou de "quanta". Ele postulou que a luz não se propaga apenas como uma onda contínua, mas também como partículas discretas de energia, os 'quanta de luz', posteriormente chamados de fótons. Cada fóton possui uma energia específica (E=hf), proporcional à sua frequência.

Essa concepção corpuscular da luz foi fundamental para desvendar o enigma do efeito fotoelétrico, onde elétrons são ejetados de uma superfície metálica ao serem atingidos por luz. Einstein demonstrou que a emissão de elétrons depende da frequência da luz, e não de sua intensidade, pois cada fóton individual deve ter energia suficiente para 'arrancar' um elétron. Seu trabalho lhe rendeu o Prêmio Nobel de Física em 1921.
