Three Key Features for Consonant Classification

• Voicing: Vocal folds vibrate (voiced) or not (voiceless).

• Place of Articulation: Where airflow is obstructed (e.g., lips, tongue).

• Manner of Articulation: How airflow is obstructed (e.g., stop, fricative).

Voicing: The Role of Vocal Fold Vibration

Voicing is the vibration of your vocal folds. Voiced consonants (e.g., /b/, /d/, /g/) vibrate; voiceless (e.g., /p/, /t/, /k/) do not – feel your throat! These often appear in pairs on the IPA chart.

Vowels, consonants, and semivowels: artistic representation of speech sounds.

Place of Articulation: Where Sounds Are Made

Place of articulation describes where in your vocal tract airflow is obstructed to form a consonant. This corresponds to the horizontal columns of the IPA chart, moving from your lips to your glottis. It defines *where* a sound is made.

Labial Consonants: Lips and Teeth

• Labial sounds use lips or lips and teeth.

• Bilabial: both lips together. E.g., /p/, /b/, /m/.

Dorsal consonants use the tongue body. Palatal sounds like /j/ (yes) touch the hard palate. Velar sounds like /k/, /g/, /ŋ/ (cat, go, sing) touch the soft palate.

Manners of Articulation: Approximants &amp; Laterals

Manner of articulation describes *how* airflow is obstructed or modified within the vocal tract. It explains the type of constriction or opening used to produce a sound. This is distinct from *where* the sound is made.
