Introduction to Welding Positions

Welding positions classify how you hold the workpiece and joint, which is vital for choosing the right technique. Mastering these positions ensures safe welding and high-quality results for any project.

The Four Primary Positions

• Flat (1F/1G): Easiest, gravity helps puddle control.

• Horizontal (2F/2G): Gravity pulls molten metal down.

• Vertical (3F/3G): Weld uphill or downhill against gravity.

• Overhead (4F/4G): Gravity constantly fights molten puddle.

What is a Horizontal Weld?

Where is it Used?

A horizontal weld has its weld axis parallel to the ground. The weld metal is deposited on a horizontal surface. This is often referred to as the 2F (fillet) or 2G (groove) position.

It's typically performed on the upper side of a horizontal joint. Consider welding a 'T' joint with the plate flat (2F). Or a butt joint connecting two horizontal pieces (2G).

In horizontal welding (2F/2G), the joint runs horizontally. This allows the welder to deposit molten metal onto the top or upper face of the joint. Gravity assists in controlling the weld puddle.

Gravity's Dominant Influence

Gravity constantly pulls the molten weld pool downwards in horizontal welding. This demands precise control to prevent sagging or uneven beads, unlike the relative ease of flat position welding.

Molten Pool Management Techniques

Control the molten pool to fight gravity in horizontal welds. Maintain a tight arc, use a slight upward electrode angle, and precise travel speed. This ensures proper fusion and prevents sagging.

Horizontal Fillet Welds (2F Position)

• 2F: Weld axis horizontal, face vertical.

• Common for T-joints and lap joints.

• Weld metal fills corner, triangular shape.

• Used on structural brackets and frames.

Horizontal Groove Welds (2G Position)

• Groove weld in a horizontal position (2G).

• Joins two plates edge-to-edge (butt joint).

• Weld metal fills the prepared horizontal groove.

• Example: Welding steel tank wall sections.
