Meet Ivan: Identity

Welcome to Lesson 2! Today, we'll meet Ivan and start exploring what makes him, him. We will learn how to understand a character's identity by looking at their words, actions, and feelings. This will help us think about our own unique identities too!

Who is Ivan?

Ivan is a friendly gorilla who lives in a shopping mall. He is the main character in our story, "The One and Only Ivan." Today, we will explore what makes Ivan unique.

What Makes You, YOU?

What are the unique things that make you special? Think about your interests, feelings, and what you do. What makes you different from others?

Vocabulary: Friend

A friend is someone you care about and trust, who supports you. For example, a friend might help you with homework, like when David helped Emily understand a tricky science problem. Friends also enjoy spending time together, whether playing at recess or working on a project.

Vocabulary: Alone

To be alone means you are by yourself, without other people. Sometimes, being alone can feel peaceful, like when you are reading a book quietly in your room. However, it can also feel lonely if you wish your friends were with you, showing the difference from friendship.

• Who you are as a person.

• Your unique traits (e.g., kind, curious).

• What you like, feel, and believe.

• Shaped by your experiences and memories.

Vocabulary: Community

A community is a group of people who live or work together, like your classmates in school or your neighbors on your street. Being part of a community helps shape who you are by giving you shared experiences and connections. For example, playing on a soccer team connects you to teammates and teaches you teamwork.
