Our eyes can see many amazing things, but there's a whole tiny world we can't see. A microscope is a powerful tool that helps us explore these super small objects. Get ready to discover hidden details of everyday things, like a leaf or a drop of water!

Why Use a Microscope?

Microscopes help us see things too small for our eyes, like tiny plant cells or bacteria. They let us explore hidden details of insects, water samples, and even our own blood. Using them helps scientists make amazing new discoveries about life and the world around us.

The Eyepiece: Your Window

The eyepiece is the top part of the microscope where you look to see your specimen. It works like a powerful magnifying glass, further enlarging the image that the objective lenses have already magnified. This lets you clearly observe tiny things, such as the cells of an onion peel.

The Stage: Holding Your Sample

The stage is the flat platform on your microscope where you place the glass slide. Imagine putting a leaf or a drop of pond water on a slide here. Clips hold your sample steady under the objective lenses for clear viewing.

Diaphragm

Stage clips are small metal arms found on top of the stage of your microscope. Their job is to hold the glass slide, with your specimen like a tiny piece of an insect wing or a plant cell, firmly in place. This prevents the slide from accidentally moving while you are trying to observe it under the lens.

The diaphragm is a rotating disk or lever located right under the stage, beneath the hole where light comes through. It controls the amount of light that passes up through your specimen and into the objective lens. You can adjust it to make your view clearer, just like opening or closing window blinds to get the right amount of sunlight in a room.

• Use it first to find your sample.

• Fine Knob: For small, super clear adjustments.

• Use it to see tiny details sharply.

How a Microscope Works

Light from the illuminator shines through your specimen on the stage, which is where you place your slide. This light then travels up through the objective lens, which magnifies the image, and then through the body tube to the eyepiece. When you look into the eyepiece, your eye sees a much larger, magnified image of the tiny object.
