Around 400 BCE, the Greek philosopher Democritus proposed that all matter is composed of tiny, indivisible particles he called "atomos," meaning "uncuttable." He theorized that these atomos were eternal, unchangeable, and differed only in shape, size, and arrangement. This was a purely conceptual model, not supported by experimental evidence, yet it represented a profound early attempt to understand matter's fundamental nature.

Despite its speculative nature, Democritus's atomic hypothesis offered a revolutionary alternative to prevailing ideas, such as Aristotle's theory of four elements (earth, air, fire, water). While Aristotle's view dominated Western thought for nearly two millennia, Democritus's concept of fundamental, indivisible particles laid crucial intellectual groundwork. It provided a conceptual framework that would be revisited and empirically validated much later, beginning with John Dalton in the early 19th century.
