Imagine writing the distance to the sun or the size of a single virus using regular numbers. It quickly becomes cumbersome and hard to read.

A Shorthand for Numbers

Scientific notation provides a compact way to express extremely large or small numbers. Instead of writing many zeros, like 150,000,000 km for the Earth-Sun distance, we use powers of ten. This makes calculations and comparisons much simpler.

Scientific notation: coefficient and power of 10 simplify numbers.

Standard Form Rules

• Product of a coefficient and a power of 10.

• Coefficient (first factor) is 1 ≤ n &lt; 10.

• Power of 10 (second factor) has an integer exponent.

• Example: 3.84 x 10^8 meters (Earth-Moon distance).

The Coefficient's Rule

In scientific notation, the coefficient (M) must be a number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10. This means M can be 1, 2.5, or 9.99, but not 0.5 or 10. This rule ensures a unique standard form for numbers.

Exponent's Role

• Exponent (n) is an integer, never a fraction.

• Indicates decimal point's moved places.

• Positive 'n' for large numbers, like 6.02 x 10^23.

• Negative 'n' for small numbers, like 1.6 x 10^-19.

Standard Form Examples

Not Standard Form

Numbers like 3.45 x 10^6 and 1 x 10^-3 are in standard form. Their coefficients are between 1 and 10 (including 1). The base is always 10, and the exponent is an integer.

0.5 x 10^4 is not standard form because 0.5 is less than 1. Also, 12.3 x 10^7 is incorrect as 12.3 is 10 or greater. The coefficient must be 1 ≤ a &lt; 10.

Locate the Decimal Point

Create the Coefficient

For any whole number, the decimal point is always understood to be at the very end. For example, in the number 7,500,000, the decimal is after the last zero. This is your starting position for conversion.

Now, move the decimal point to the left until there is only one non-zero digit remaining to its left. For 7,500,000, move it until it's between the 7 and the 5. This creates your coefficient, 7.5.

Count Decimal Places

To find the exponent for a large number, count how many places you move the decimal point to the left until it is after the first non-zero digit. This count becomes your positive exponent. For example, 7,500,000,000 becomes 7.5 x 10^9.
