Building Blocks of Algebra

Variables are letters, like 'x' or 'y', that represent unknown quantities in math. For instance, in the expression '3 + x', 'x' could be any number. We will review how these variables combine with numbers using operations like addition and subtraction.

Algebra variables: x, y, n, a in equations and expressions.

Meet the 'Terms'

• Terms: Parts separated by + or -. (Ex: 4x, 7, -2y)

• Variables: Letters representing unknown values. (Ex: x, y)

• Coefficients: Numbers multiplying variables. (Ex: 4, -2)

• Constants: Numbers without variables. (Ex: 7)

Identifying Like Terms

Like terms are terms that have the exact same variable(s) raised to the same power. For example, `4x` and `-2x` are like terms because they both have 'x' to the power of 1. However, `5y` and `5y^2` are not like terms because their 'y' variables have different powers.

Algebra variables: X, equations, graphs, and like terms.

Combining Like Terms

Combining like terms is like sorting fruits. You can add 3 apples and 2 apples to get 5 apples, just as you combine 3x and 2x to get 5x. We add or subtract the numbers (coefficients) in front, keeping the variable part unchanged.
