Tools for Active Readers

Create an 8-slide presentation for Grade 6-8 ELL learners in English. This is the formal connection-to-theory section after a group reading challenge. Slide 1 names the goal: reading means building meaning and writing means communicating thinking. Slide 2 connects to the students’ garden mission and introduces a before-during-after active reading routine. Slide 3 explains before-reading habits: preview the title and text features, set a purpose, and predict. Slide 4 explains during-reading strategies: make purposeful inquiries, identify the main idea and supporting details, make connections, visualize, and infer. Slide 5 explains monitoring comprehension: notice confusion, reread, slow down, use context, and record unfamiliar vocabulary for later. Slide 6 explains after-reading strategies: summarize in your own words and support a claim with a precise text detail. Slide 7 presents good reading habits: choose a focused time and place, read in manageable chunks, annotate purposefully, reread, and discuss or write about the text. Slide 8 models the complete routine on this short paragraph: “Maya placed her phone in another room before starting her science article. She previewed the headings, predicted that the article would explain why some birds migrate, and wrote down one unfamiliar word. After reading, she could state the main idea and cite a detail about changing food supplies.” Show the sequence Preview, Predict, Read, Notice, Repair, Summarize, and Support with evidence. Use accessible language, visuals, examples, and speaker notes for teacher think-alouds. Do not add a quiz or worksheet.
