What Are Structures?

A structure is anything built to contain, protect, support, or span gaps. Think of a house protecting you, a bridge spanning a river, or even a pylon supporting power lines!

Three Structure Types

Shell Structures

These structures get their strength from their curved outer layer. Think of an eggshell or a dome building.

Solid Structures

These are strong blocks of material. They rely on their mass to hold shape, like a brick wall or a dam.

Frame Structures

These use a skeleton of beams and columns. Most buildings, like your house, are frame structures.

Shell structures are hollow, strong forms. They use their outer surface for support, protecting what’s inside. Think of an eggshell: it’s thin but keeps the yolk safe!
