Wh- Question Syntax: walkthrough
Section role: supports the 'Building the Blueprint' section while the teacher formally introduces the grammatical structures of Wh- questions and addresses common errors. Slides: (1) Title — 'Building Wh- Questions: The Blueprint'; (2) Recap Challenge — bullets: briefly reference the 'Missing Witness Report' activity, prompt students to recall how they asked for specific information; (3) The Core Structure — Wh- Word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb; (4) Auxiliary Verbs 'do/does/did' — bullets: present simple (do/does) and past simple (did) examples, highlight 'Where did he go?'; (5) Auxiliary Verb 'to be' — bullets: present continuous (is/are) and past continuous (was/were) examples, note different structure for 'who/what is/was' when asking about the subject; (6) Categorizing Wh- Words — bullets: review Who, What, Where, When, Why, How, connect to the type of information each seeks; (7) Common Error: Inversion — bullets: explicitly address 'Where he went?' vs. 'Where did he go?', provide correct examples; (8) Practice It! — prompt: construct two correct Wh- questions based on given answers. Concrete examples: 'What did you eat?', 'Where are they going?', 'Who was talking?', 'Why did she leave?'. Hooks back to the 'Missing Witness Report' challenge (Section 2) by referencing student experiences and sets up the 'Red Carpet Interview' (Section 4) by providing the grammatical foundation. Closing slide: 'What is one key rule for forming Wh- questions?' – hands control back to the teacher for a quick check for understanding. This material is part of a English foreign-language class for students in Mexico learning English. Regardless of the material's language, the key terms and examples being taught must be written in English, not in the students' native language.
