Objectives

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this step is to establish clear and achievable objectives that will guide the learners throughout the lesson on creating simple data tables. By setting these objectives, students will not only focus on the mathematical aspect of organizing data but will also engage in socioemotional learning. This dual focus will enable them to enhance their emotional intelligence, fostering skills like self-awareness and social skills by understanding their feelings while interacting with data and their peers.

Main Objectives

1. Students will learn to create simple data tables using rows and columns to organize information clearly.

2. Students will develop emotional awareness by identifying and expressing their feelings about sharing information with others.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Warmup Activity

Breathe and Focus

Guided Mindfulness Breathing

1. 1. Gather students in a comfortable sitting position, either on chairs or cross-legged on the floor.

2. 2. Ask the students to close their eyes gently to minimize distractions.

3. 3. Lead them through a brief introduction: 'We are going to take some calming breaths together to help us focus on the lesson ahead.'

4. 4. Instruct them to take a deep breath in through their noses for a count of four.

5. 5. Have them hold that breath for a count of four.

6. 6. Then, guide them to breathe out slowly through their mouths for a count of six, ensuring they feel the air leave their bodies.

7. 7. Repeat this cycle four times, ensuring to maintain a calm and soothing voice.

8. 8. After the last exhale, gently prompt them to open their eyes and notice how they feel.

Content Contextualization

Creating data tables may seem like just a school task, but they are essential tools we use in everyday life to keep our information organized. For instance, when planning a party, having a simple data table can help us identify how many friends are coming, what snacks to prepare, and what games to play. It allows us to share information clearly with our family and friends. Furthermore, understanding how to create these tables can help us become better communicators, as we learn to express our ideas and feelings through organized information. It’s important to remember that while we learn to organize data, we also learn to organize our thoughts and emotions—skills that are incredibly valuable in our friendships and interactions.

Development

Duration: (60 - 75 minutes)

Theory Guide

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

1. Data tables consist of rows and columns. A row is a horizontal line, while a column is a vertical line. Together, they create a grid-like structure that helps organize information.

2. In a simple data table, headings are used to label each column. For example, if creating a table of favourite fruits, the first row could have headings like 'Name', 'Fruit', and 'Quantity'.

3. Each piece of information is then filled into the corresponding cells beneath the headings. For example, if a student named 'Sipho' likes 'Bananas' and has '5' of them, the data table would reflect that specific information in the right spot.

4. Tables can be used not just for numbers but for textual information too. They help in comparing different items easily, making it simpler to interpret data.

5. Encourage students to think of real-life examples where they may have seen or used data tables, such as school projects, grocery lists, or even sport statistics.

Activity with Socioemotional Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Criando Nossa Tabela de Dados

In this activity, students will work in pairs to create their own simple data tables based on their favourite snacks and drinks. Each student will list their top three snacks and drinks, and then they will compile their data into a table format. This exercise encourages collaboration, sharing of personal preferences, and helps students practice organizing information logically.

1. 1. Divide the students into pairs and provide each pair with chart paper and markers.

2. 2. Ask each student to individually think of their three favourite snacks and three favourite drinks.

3. 3. In their pairs, have students discuss their choices and agree on a combined list of their favourite snacks and drinks.

4. 4. Together, they should create a simple data table with the headings: 'Student Name', 'Snack', and 'Drink'.

5. 5. Each pair should fill in their table with information from both students, making sure to include their names.

6. 6. Once the tables are completed, pairs can present their findings to the class.

Discussion and Group Feedback

After the activity, initiate a group discussion where students can recognize and express their emotions about sharing their favourite snacks and drinks with their classmates. Ask them to share how they felt during the activity and what they enjoyed most about working with a partner. This will encourage self-awareness as they reflect on their emotions and reactions throughout the process.

Guide students through the RULER method by encouraging them to identify any feelings that arose, such as happiness or shyness when sharing personal details. Use prompts like 'What emotions did you feel when sharing with your partner?' to facilitate understanding and labeling of those emotions. Encourage them to express how they managed their feelings while listening to their peers and maintaining a supportive environment.

Finally, help them regulate their emotions by discussing strategies for feeling confident and comfortable when sharing information. This could include positive thinking or supporting one another, pushing them to develop social skills and responsible decision-making in group settings.

Conclusion

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

Reflection and Emotional Regulation

To conclude the lesson, guide the students to reflect on the challenges they faced while creating their data tables, specifically focusing on how they felt when sharing personal information with their peers. Facilitate a group discussion where students can express their thoughts on the process. Encourage them to talk about any emotions they experienced, such as excitement about sharing their favourites or apprehension about how their choices might be perceived. This can follow up with a written reflection, asking students to write down one challenge they faced and how they handled their emotions during the activity. This dual approach of discussion and written reflection will help students practice self-awareness and emotional regulation.

Objective: The objective of this subsection is to encourage self-assessment and emotional regulation among students. By identifying the challenges they encountered and the emotions that arose during the lesson, students are prompted to develop effective strategies for managing their feelings in similar situations in the future. This will aid in enhancing their self-awareness and enabling responsible decision-making when faced with emotional situations.

Glimpse into the Future

Wrap up the lesson by asking students to think about how they can set personal and academic goals related to the skills they learned about creating data tables. For instance, they could aim to create a data table at home for a family gathering or set a goal to share their interests with others in a structured way, using tables to make the information clear and organized. Discuss as a class how these goals can help them communicate better and stay organized.

Setting Goals:

1. Create a data table for their favourite books to share with friends.

2. Set a goal to present their next school project using a data table.

3. Practice sharing their feelings in a structured way using tables for discussions with friends and family. Objective: The objective of this subsection is to strengthen students' autonomy while applying the concepts learned in a practical manner. By setting personal and academic goals related to the lesson content, students will see the value of their new skills in real-life situations, which will encourage ongoing development both academically and personally.
