World War I: Conclusion of the War

Objectives (5-7 minutes)

  1. Understand the signing of the Armistice of Compiègne: Students should be able to understand what the Armistice of Compiègne was, how and why it was signed, and its implications for the end of WWI.

  2. Identify the consequences of the War: Students should understand the major effects of WWI, both globally and locally. They should be able to discuss and analyze the political, social, and economic changes that occurred as a direct or indirect result of the conflict.

  3. Analyze Brazil's participation in the war: Students should be able to understand Brazil's role in WWI, why the country got involved, and what the consequences of this involvement were. They should be able to assess the importance of the Brazilian experience in the war for the country's development.

    Secondary Objectives:

    1. Develop research and analysis skills: Students should practice researching reliable historical information and critically analyzing that information.

    2. Stimulate discussion and debate: Throughout the lesson, students should be encouraged to participate in discussions and debates about the topics covered, improving their argumentation and critical thinking skills.

Introduction (10-15 minutes)

  1. Review of Previous Content:

    • The teacher should begin the lesson with a brief review of the beginning of WWI, highlighting the main events and the powers involved.
    • Brazil's participation in the war should be recalled, emphasizing the sending of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) and the importance of this fact for the context of the lesson.
  2. Problem Situations:

    • The teacher can propose two situations to arouse students' curiosity:
      1. How do you think the soldiers who fought in WWI felt when they found out that the war was finally over?
      2. What changes do you believe WWI brought to the world and to Brazil?
  3. Contextualization:

    • The teacher should explain that the end of WWI marked an important moment in world history, with major political, social, and economic transformations.
    • It should be emphasized that Brazil's participation in this conflict had a significant impact on the consolidation of democracy in the country.
  4. Gaining Students' Attention:

    • The teacher can share two curiosities about WWI to catch students' attention:
      1. During the war, soldiers from both sides were frequently exposed to toxic gases, which caused irreversible damage to their health. This led to the development of the first gas masks.
      2. WWI was the first conflict to be widely documented in photographs. The gruesome images of the trenches and the wounded or dead soldiers shocked the world and changed society's perception of war.
  5. Topic Presentation:

    • The teacher should introduce the topic of the lesson, which will be the end of WWI and its consequences. It should be explained that students will learn about the signing of the Armistice of Compiègne, the consequences of the war, and Brazil's participation in the conflict.

Development (20-25 minutes)

  1. Activity "The End of the War": (10-12 minutes)

    • Divide the class into groups of 5 students. Each group will receive a large sheet of paper, colored pens, and stickers.
    • The teacher will present the situation: "You are a group of soldiers from different nationalities who fought in WWI. You have just received the news that the war has finally come to an end. You decide to record this moment of relief and reflection."
    • Each group should illustrate and write words or phrases that represent their feelings and thoughts about the end of the war. They should also include elements that symbolize the signing of the Armistice of Compiègne.
    • After completing the illustrations, the groups should present their creations to the class, explaining the meaning of each element chosen. The teacher should lead a discussion about the similarities and differences between the groups' representations.
  2. Activity "Impacts of the War": (10-12 minutes)

    • Still in groups, students will receive a list of events and changes that occurred after the end of WWI, both globally and in Brazil. Examples of items on the list may include the creation of the League of Nations, the Treaty of Versailles, the 1930 Revolution in Brazil, among others.
    • Each group should choose three items from the list and discuss, in a paragraph, how these events or changes impacted the world and Brazil. They should use their research and analysis skills to complete the task.
    • After completing the activity, the teacher should ask the groups to share their answers with the class. This will allow for a more in-depth discussion about the impacts of WWI.
  3. Activity "Brazil's Participation": (5-7 minutes)

    • The teacher should divide the class into two groups. Each group should represent a different position on Brazil's participation in WWI. For example, one group may believe that Brazil should have remained neutral, while the other group may support the decision to send troops.
    • Each group will have a few minutes to prepare their arguments. They should use historical information and logical reasoning to support their positions.
    • After the preparation, the teacher should lead a debate between the two groups. The goal is not to determine a winner, but rather to promote a healthy and respectful discussion on the topic. The teacher should intervene, if necessary, to ensure that all students have the opportunity to speak and that the discussion remains focused and respectful.

Feedback (8-10 minutes)

  1. Group Discussion (3-5 minutes):

    • The teacher should gather all students and start a group discussion. Each group will have a maximum of 3 minutes to share their solutions or conclusions from the activities carried out.
    • During this discussion, the teacher should ensure that all groups have the opportunity to speak and that the points of view are respected.
    • The teacher can ask each group what were the main challenges they faced during the activities and how they were able to overcome them. This can help identify any areas where students may need reinforcement or additional guidance.
  2. Connection to Theory (2-3 minutes):

    • After the discussion, the teacher should do a brief recap of the main theories, concepts, and events that were discussed during the lesson.
    • The teacher should then connect these points with the practical activities carried out by the students. For example, when discussing the Armistice of Compiègne, the teacher can recall the students' illustrations and words about the end of the war.
    • This will help students see how theory and practice are interconnected and apply what they have learned more effectively.
  3. Final Reflection (3-4 minutes):

    • To conclude the lesson, the teacher should ask students to reflect individually on what they have learned.
    • The teacher can ask the following questions to guide students' reflection:
      1. What was the most important concept you learned today?
      2. What questions have not yet been answered?
    • Students should have a minute to think about these questions and then have the opportunity to share their answers with the class, if they wish.
    • The final reflection will allow students to consolidate their learning, identify areas that they still don't fully understand, and express any feelings of confusion or uncertainty they may have. This can help the teacher plan future lessons and adapt their teaching to meet the individual needs of students.

Conclusion (5-7 minutes)

  1. Content Summary (2-3 minutes):

    • The teacher should summarize the main points covered during the lesson, recalling the signing of the Armistice of Compiègne, the consequences of WWI, and Brazil's participation in the conflict.
    • The political, social, and economic changes that occurred after the war should be highlighted, both globally and in Brazil, and the importance of this conflict for the consolidation of democracy in the country.
    • The teacher can then make a connection between the theory, the practical activities, and the group discussions, reinforcing how these elements complement each other to promote meaningful learning.
  2. Connection of Theory with Practice (1-2 minutes):

    • The teacher should explain how the lesson connected theoretical concepts with practice.
    • For example, when discussing the Armistice of Compiègne, students not only learned about the event itself, but also had the opportunity to reflect on how the soldiers who were in the front lines of the war may have felt when they found out that the conflict was over.
    • Similarly, when discussing the consequences of the war and Brazil's participation, students were able to apply their research and analysis skills to better understand the impact of these events on society.
  3. Extra Materials (1-2 minutes):

    • The teacher should recommend extra materials for students who wish to deepen their knowledge on the topic.
    • These materials may include documentaries, books, journal articles, and reliable history websites.
    • The teacher can, for example, suggest the book "The First World War" by Hew Strachan, which provides a comprehensive overview of the conflict, or the documentary "Apocalypse: World War I", which presents rare and emotional footage of the conflict.
    • When recommending these materials, the teacher should emphasize the importance of checking the reliability of the sources and using these resources as a complement to the teaching material provided in class.
  4. Importance of the Topic (1 minute):

    • Finally, the teacher should highlight the importance of the topic covered for understanding the contemporary world.
    • It should be explained that WWI had a lasting impact on the configuration of the modern world, influencing geopolitics, economics, and society.
    • Furthermore, Brazil's participation in this conflict played a fundamental role in the consolidation of democracy in the country.
    • By understanding these historical events, students can gain a broader view of the world and develop a deeper appreciation for the importance of peace, international cooperation, and democracy.
